I am a medical doctor trained in psychiatry, and a scientist.
I am particularly interested in combining early screening of mental health vulnerabilities and prevention of future mental health conditions in young people.
I strongly believe that early screening and prevention is the most effective way to promote good mental health in young people and improve their lives.
I have pioneered new methods to screen for early warning signs of mental conditions in young people aged 14-35 and forecast their outcomes. These approaches have been crucial to study brain development in young people and identify problems as early as possible. I have championed personalised preventive care, including psychological interventions, lifestyle changes and pharmacological treatments to improve youth mental health.
The results of my work have contributed to earlier identification of mental health vulnerabilities in young people and significantly improved their personal wellbeing.
I have received several awards, edited or co-authored 10 books and written about 500 scientific papers which are very frequently cited and used by my colleagues and young people (top 1% worldwide for scientific impact). I had my work featured worldwide across several national and international scientific conferences and I am also chairing international clinical research networks to promote youth mental health.
I am Professor of Preventive Psychiatry at the Institute of Psychiatry, Psychology and Neuroscience, King’s College London, UK and Associate Professor of Psychiatry at the University of Pavia, Italy.
I also hold an Honorary Consultant Psychiatrist position at the Outreach and Support in South London (OASIS).

The Truman Show: Has a film ever predicted the future so accurately?
“One can then assume that the widespread access to mobiles and social media would only have elevated Truman-like anxieties further.
That is certainly the belief of Dr Paolo Fusar-Poli, Professor and Chair of Preventive Psychiatry in the Department of Psychosis Studies at King's College London, and co-author of research on the Truman Show Syndrome phenomenon published in the 2008 British Journal of Psychiatry.”
